How we read a retour d'EstHow it works, what we watch, the reference episode

A retour d'Est (easterly return) begins when a low deepens over the Gulf of Genoa and northern Italy. Moist air from the Mediterranean is drawn up the Po plain, banks against the peaks along the border and spills over onto the French side. The upper Tarentaise and upper Maurienne then take most of the snow, while the Sillon Alpin, the long valley around Chambéry and Grenoble, often stays dry.

We watch three signals, hour by hour: an east to south-easterly wind around 3,000 m (20 km/h or more, from 50° to 160°), pressure at least 3 hPa higher over Geneva and Lyon than over Turin and Genoa, and the snow forecast by the Italian model ICON-2I set against AROME (Météo-France), ICON-D2 (Germany) and ECMWF.

These thresholds are our own. We refine them by comparing each forecast with the snow that actually fell.

The reference episode: 7 and 8 January 2018, when close to 1.80 m of snow fell on the eastern upper Maurienne, according to Météo-France's climate summary for Rhône-Alpes.

Observations and radar come from Météo-France. Forecasts from the AROME, ICON-2I, ICON-D2 and ECMWF models are served by Open-Meteo. Base map: Natural Earth and OpenMapTiles.

The Val d'Isère snow report on this page follows the mountain from the village at 1,850 m to the Pissaillas glacier, where the Montets drag lift reaches 3,197 m, and sets out the Val d'Isère snow forecast altitude by altitude. Every figure comes from Météo-France and carries the date and time of its last update.

Val d'Isère and Tignes come under the Haute-Tarentaise massif in Météo-France's avalanche bulletin, the BERA, together with Sainte-Foy, La Rosière and Les Arcs. The danger is graded from 1 to 5 on the European scale: low, moderate, considerable, high and very high. The bulletin also gives the changes with altitude, the slope aspects most exposed, the avalanche problems and the trend.

Only the official text is authoritative: the Météo-France avalanche bulletin, read with the European avalanche danger scale. Our page on avalanche safety in Val d'Isère goes further.

Where to find the best snow in Val d'Isère

Season after season, a good day here keeps the same rhythm: Solaise in the morning, Bellevarde in the afternoon.

Morning: Solaise

Above the village, Solaise has broad, gentle slopes that stay in shade early on, while the snow is still cold, before the sun reaches them during the morning.

Afternoon: Bellevarde and Le Fornet

The north-facing slopes of Bellevarde and Le Fornet keep the fresh snow for the afternoon.

Cold snow: the Pissaillas glacier

Above Le Fornet, the Pissaillas is the highest and coldest sector of Val d'Isère, where the snow holds longest.

Spring: follow the freeze

Follow the overnight freeze and ski the corn as it softens in mid-morning on the sunny slopes, keeping the Pissaillas for cold snow.

FAQ

Is there snow in Val d'Isère?

The snow report on this page shows the snow depth on the ground, measured at the weather stations, with the time of the reading. For the coldest snow, head for the Pissaillas glacier.

How much colder is it at the top of Val d'Isère?

Between the village at 1,850 m and the top of the Pissaillas glacier at 3,197 m, the gap is often eight or nine degrees. In ordinary weather the air cools by roughly 0.6 to 0.7 °C every 100 metres.

Val d'Isère or Tignes: which way today?

Both are part of the Espace Killy, linked by Tovière and the col de Fresse, so you can follow the snow from one to the other. Compare this page with the Tignes weather.
