How we read a retour d'EstHow it works, what we watch, the reference episode
A retour d'Est (easterly return) begins when a low deepens over the Gulf of Genoa and northern Italy. Moist air from the Mediterranean is drawn up the Po plain, banks against the peaks along the border and spills over onto the French side. The upper Tarentaise and upper Maurienne then take most of the snow, while the Sillon Alpin, the long valley around Chambéry and Grenoble, often stays dry.
We watch three signals, hour by hour: an east to south-easterly wind around 3,000 m (20 km/h or more, from 50° to 160°), pressure at least 3 hPa higher over Geneva and Lyon than over Turin and Genoa, and the snow forecast by the Italian model ICON-2I set against AROME (Météo-France), ICON-D2 (Germany) and ECMWF.
These thresholds are our own. We refine them by comparing each forecast with the snow that actually fell.
The reference episode: 7 and 8 January 2018, when close to 1.80 m of snow fell on the eastern upper Maurienne, according to Météo-France's climate summary for Rhône-Alpes.

Where to find the best snow in Tignes
Pointers that hold good from one winter to the next.
First thing: the Grande Motte glacier
Go up to the glacier as the lifts open, while the snow is at its coldest; the Perce-Neige funicular leaves from Val Claret.
As the sun comes round: Lognan and the col du Palet
Come back down from the glacier and ski Lognan and the col du Palet in the sunshine.
The morning after a snowfall
Yesterday's snow stays cold on the heights, so start high and work your way down as the day warms.
Spring: follow the freeze
The overnight freeze sets the pace: corn snow on the sunny slopes from mid-morning, and the glacier for cold snow.

Is there snow in Tignes today?
The snow report on this page shows the snow depth on the ground, measured at the weather stations, with the time of the reading. For cold snow, start on the Grande Motte glacier.
How much colder is it on the glacier than at Tignes le Lac?
Usually eight to nine degrees in ordinary weather. The air cools by roughly 0.6 to 0.7 °C for every 100 metres you climb, and the top of the Grande Motte cable car, at 3,456 m, sits more than 1,350 metres above Tignes le Lac at 2,100 m.
